The Cricket World Cup was first played in the year 1975 and since then this World Cup tournament was scheduled to take place once in four years. But, when it was time to host the World Cup in 1991, after it was hosted in 1979, 1983 and 1987, the World Cup was not hosted in 1991 and instead it took place in Australia and New Zealand in 1992.
The main reason why the World Cup was pushed to the fifth year to 1992 instead of the tournament taking place once in four years in 1991 was because the preceding World Cup in 1987 that was held in India and Pakistan was held between 8th October and 8th November 1987. So, if the next World Cup was to come up in 1991, it should have been hosted in the months of October and November in 1991. But, since Australia and New Zealand were the host countries and the climate during those months was not favorable to play cricket, The governing body of cricket decided to push the World Cup to 1992 as it was summer season in Australia and New Zealand and the most suited climate to play cricket.
The World Cup in 1992 was held between 22nd February and March 25 in Australia and New Zealand.
As there was an exception made in 1992 World Cup when it was held after a gap of five years, The International Cricket Council wanted to compensate for the earlier adjustment and decided to host the 1999 World Cup in England after three years of 1996 World Cup that was held in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. So, the 1999 World Cup was held instead of it being held in 2000. After the 1999 World Cup, the spacing between the tournaments has fallen on the track and it is now being held once in 4 years and that too in an odd year.
The subsequent World Cup tournaments after the 1999 World Cup have been staged once in every four years, namely: 2003, 2007 and 2011. The next World Cup will be played again in Australia and New Zealand and this time it will be held after 4 years only and in 2015.in fact, the ICC Cricket World Cup is just round the corner and it will be held from 14th February to 25th March 2015 and the attention of the entire cricket fans will be on this World Cup.
